On Jan. 2, comedian Artie Lange was found by his mother in his Hoboken, N.J., apartment, having stabbed himself several times but still alive with a probability of recovery. For fans of his work on “The Howard Stern Show,” this was truly sad news but not entirely shocking, since Lange belongs to that sector of talented comics with terrible self-loathing issues. After all, he named his autobiography “Too Fat to Fish,” a reference to something his mother once yelled at him before a fishing trip.
But on “Jack and Coke,” a stand-up Lange recorded in 2009 after going through rehab, the comedian is in classic form, meaning that he tells one enthusiastically filthy and self-deprecating story after another.
Lange gets in the gutter with his subjects (Lawrence Taylor and Mike Tyson provide choice material), and his routine is a laundry list of transgressions that become more manic as he passes the hour mark. Viewers with sensitivities toward, well, just about anything will feel as if they’ve been flash-fried in a pan of profanity, but for those beyond help, Lange is a riot.
For most of 2009, Lange seemed on the mend after a particularly rough patch in which he loudly quit the Stern show and backslid on his drug use.
During “Jack and Coke,” Lange is entirely on the wagon and nursing a glass of water onstage, proving that he does not have to be in meltdown mode to get the laughs. Stern fans will belly up to “Jack and Coke,” though the timing of the release is sobering indeed.
